New Creature in Christ

This phrase may sound a little crazy or unbelievable to you, but just think of what happens when a caterpillar goes through metamorphosis and becomes a butterfly. (I’m really hoping that you don’t think of that as reincarnation).

Metamorphosis is a scientific, biological process. It is just a different stage in the life of the butterfly. When you come to Christ, you receive the Spirit of God, and you are the same person  that you were, but you’ve just been transformed by His Spirit.

Actually, that is the same thing that is going to happen to us when we die if we are adopted into the family of God (adoption will be the topic of another future blog which will help us to understand how merciful God is). We will experience another stage in our life, when our natural body will be resurrected as a spiritual body. In the meantime, while we remain on this earth, our character is to be changing to become more like Jesus. As we discover more and more who He is through the Spirit and by studying His Word, the Bible, we will be changed.

Does this mean that we will be perfect immediately, and never sin again? No. While on this earth, we are in the process of becoming more and more like Jesus Christ. Even though we should always be walking in newness of life, there will be times that we will do things that we don’t want to do, and not do things that we want to do. However, we can thank God through Jesus Christ, that, even though we fail sometimes (serving our flesh with the law of sin), we know that with our mind we still serve the law of God; and that, if we honestly and sincerely confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us from all unrighteousness.
